A specification that simply states "epoxy primer, 150 μm, or equivalent" invites mid-project substitution disputes. We always require a named product, manufacturer, and the specific Technical Data Sheet revision date that binds the contract.

Ballast tanks, underwater hull, boottop and topside all face entirely different exposure conditions — each requires its own explicitly stated NDFT. A single "ship-wide average thickness" in the spec is a sign of a sloppily assembled specification.

On a repaint dry-docking, the spec must explicitly state the maximum overcoating interval and the required preparation if it's exceeded (e.g. sweep blast, roughening). This is among the most common sources of interlayer delamination disputes.

An explicit list of edges, welds and inaccessible points requiring stripe coat, and whether one or two passes are required. "Standard practice" without a specific list almost always leads to omissions.

The spec must define measurement frequency (e.g. 1 DFT reading per 25 m²), the statistical acceptance method (SSPC-PA 2), and who has witnessing rights over each measurement.

Read the fine print: warranty coverage is frequently voided by "unauthorised repairs" or "incomplete application documentation". The shipowner must know in advance exactly what can void coverage — before, not after, a failure occurs.

8. Role & Authority of the Independent Inspector

Η spec πρέπει να παραχωρεί ρητά στον ανεξάρτητο επιθεωρητή του πλοιοκτήτη εξουσία stop-work και απαίτηση sign-off σε καθορισμένα milestones — όχι απλώς "δικαίωμα πρόσβασης". Ένας επιθεωρητής παρών χωρίς επίσημη εξουσία είναι διακοσμητικός.

The spec must explicitly grant the shipowner's independent inspector stop-work authority and mandatory sign-off at defined milestones — not merely "right of access". An inspector present without formal authority is decorative.
